Popis:	The following article uses the example of Jehan Renart’s Lai de l’ombre to focus on a specific mode of presentation by means of exempla, in which a metaphorical concept–in this case the ›shadow‹–acts as the guiding force in order to structure the protagonists’ innate thoughts and speech acts in the text. With the adventure of the well in the Roman de Renart and its Middle High German adaptation in Heinrich der Gleisner’s Reinhart Fuchs in mind, the inner mechanism of the Minneexempel (love exemplum) can be interpreted as the systematic construction of an analogy. This interpretation allows for viewing the transformations of the umbra-motif as separate stages in the conception of a typos. With the help of this allegorical model, transmission (in language) and retransmission (in the material symbol of the ring) are used to redirect the urgedriven violence of minne towards a virtual space where the lovers can bond in a way that would be impossible for them without the analogy.
