There are multiple incisional approaches to breast augmentation but the periareolar or intra-areolar approach is most popular for cosmetic surgeons. The advantages include giving excellent visualization and providing close approximation to the site of the breast implantation. This approach allows the surgeon the option of placing the implants subglandularly, subfascially, or submuscularly. The disadvantages of this approach include the presence of a scar on the surface of the breast and the passage through the breast glandular tissue. There is also the greater possibility of infection and a greater possibly of nipple and areolar sensation loss. The author discusses the preoperative consultation, the technique, and the postoperative care. |
