Popis: | Selective excitation of the 6s'(1/2)1(1P1) state of xenon by three-photon absorption produces, in the VUV range, three characteristic emissions of xenon at 129, 147 and 173 nm. For pressures above 1 Torr, the excitation spectra are obtained for laser excitation wavelengths lower than the wavelength corresponding to three-photon resonant excitation of the 1P1 state in accordance with the negative dispersion wavelength zone where third harmonic generation is possible. The sharp drops in these excitation spectra are explained by a four-photon absorption process. From the temporal analysis of the emission at 129 nm, it is reasonable to infer that an ionisation phenomenon is involved which leads to the formation of an upper atomic state responsible for the formation of radiative molecular states by three-body collisions. |
