Dentine hypersensitivity is a notable public health concern with a severe consequence to individual quality of life. Nanomaterials offer an innovative and effective approach in the treatment of DH, particularly when combined together. Due to the unique characteristics of NMs such as small size and surface area, the particles can easily penetrate into the tubules and provide effective blockage to the open dentinal tubules. However, and despite the promising outcome of NMs in the treatment of DH, concern still remains regarding their health and safety risk when used in consumer care products. These concerns mostly arise from the limited understanding of the nature and cytotoxicity profile of NMs. This chapter highlights the cytotoxicity profile and dentine tubule occluding properties of novel NMs materials that have been touted as a potential biomaterial for the treatment of DH. |
