The ageing body and the self ‐project in women's narratives

Popis:	Ageing presents women in Western society with challenges to the integrity of the embodied self. The construction of self is seen as a narrative process drawing on life history and cultural and occupational stories. Resolutions of the challenge to self‐preservation in ageing include integration of newly experienced aspects of self, splitting of identity, and dissolution of the self. Research documenting and interpreting the process of self‐reconstruction in ageing women is drawn on here to recount the narratives of three women at different stages in the process of reconstruction. The narratives offer a different view to the dominant negative social constructions of ageing.
