Popis: The purpose of this study is to examine how relationship commitment and romantic interest influence how instrumental one chooses to be toward others who are not their significant other depending on the status of those others' romantic availability. This study will build on earlier studies we have conducted in which we document instrumentality-regulation effects similar to those we predict here. The current study will conceptually replicate and extend these previous findings to help us further test our hypotheses to see whether participants are regulating their instrumentality to a partner's goals specifically and not just behaving more pro-socially or offering non-instrumental help. We test a distinct behavioral and action-oriented hypothesis-- the lack of commitment (i.e., being single) leads people to capitalize on the opportunity by being instrumental to a target's specific goal. We will also examine whether relationship commitment leads people to protect their relationships from threats by avoiding being instrumental to a target's specific goal. This would provide behavioral evidence of the strategic use of instrumentality in creating or avoiding interdependence with alternatives and further our understanding of instrumentality as a core principle of attraction (Finkel & Eastwick, 2015) and a key feature of close relationships (Orehek & Forest, 2016).
