Popis: Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) is a rare but devastating opportunistic infection that occurs in severely immunosuppressed individuals. To date there is no effective therapy for this illness; however, recovery may occur in some patients in whom immune reconstitution can be accomplished.1 β-interferon has a number of immunomodulatory and antiviral effects.2 It has been used for the treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS) where it decreases the number of relapses and contrast enhancing lesions in the brain. The mechanism by which beta interferon acts in MS is not entirely clear but the possibility that its antiviral effects may play some role has been considered. The recent occurrence of PML in two patients with MS treated with β-interferon type A and an anti-alpha-4 integrin antibody has raised the question about the role of β-interferon in the modulation of the course of JC virus (JCV) infection.3 Further, the isolation of JCV in some patients with MS has also raised questions regarding the potential role of JCV in the pathogenesis …
