In 1979 the sudden influx of Kampuchean refugees into Thailand reached disaster proportions, requiring the Thai government to request outside assistance from the international relief community. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) established a number of holding centers near the Thai-Kampuchean border. The largest of these was Khao I Dang, where the population increased to approximately 120 000 in the first 6 weeks. Medical and public health care was coordinated and provided by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and other relief organizations. |
