Popis: Surgical closure of atrial septal defects in the fifth to seventh decades is presented. This anomaly in this age group well should be thought of more commonly because of the recurrent emphasis of the benignancy of this condition in childhood. In this peripatetic age, physicians are changed often. The case of the atrial septal defect of 30 to 40 years' duration will not be uncommon. In addition, a significant number of patients, especially adults, with atrial septal defect who have been mistakenly diagnosed as rheumatics will present themselves. Surgery not only is possible, but with the low mortality rate as presented here, should be offered these patients.
