Popis: The Laozi offers poetic reflections on the formation of opposites and interplay of being and non-being, which arise and return to dao. This formation and interplay against the backdrop of dao yield an aesthetic view of not just the formations of things but of the couching formation of reality, which together yield Laozi’s notion of place. This aesthetic view of place registers the dynamic mutual dependence of the opposites that form this floating world in the perspective of dao. The present article discusses the ontology and basic philosophy supporting this aesthetic view but concentrates on its implications for grasping related notions of place, design, and functionality, as illustrated in the traditional Japanese tea house and mountain cabin, and especially in the later thought and designs of Frank Lloyd Wright. As intimated by Laozi, chap. 11, working with place, design, and functionality in light of Daoist aesthetics fosters resonance and sustainability. In summary, these aesthetic features reflect the dynamic richness of Laozi’s ontology and basic philosophy in supporting his notion of place, and offer suggestions for the design of more resonant, sustainable, and yet elegant structures, implements, and artifacts.
