Popis: By way of Julian of Norwich and a sermon by William Pembles, the conclusion restates the soul’s protean character and thematises the book’s discussions of it in terms of literary space. Having been concerned throughout with issues of historiography, we then turn to a final question. Though it is usually assumed that the soul has been expunged from serious thought in materialist modernity, through a discussion of some aspects of contemporary cognitive theory I suggest that this is not quite the case: that in fact when medieval and early modern literature considers and represents the soul, for all the strangeness and difference of its phenomenological toolbox, it grapples with an intractable phenomenon whose constitution has by no means been finally resolved in contemporary thought.
