The foliar flavonoid pattern was assessed in 55 samples representing 11 taxa of aquatic Ranunculus (subg. Batrachium ) from NW Europe (France to Sweden) or SE Europe (Greece and Aegean Sea). Quercetin 3-glucoside is accumulated as such or with additional substitutions; rhamnosylation, glucosylation or malonylation of the glucose in position 3; glucosylation of the OH in position 7; cinnamylation of the terminal glucose in position 3 which may be followed by that of the glucose in position 7. Various balances led to seven major chemotypes. Within one large geographical area, the flavonoid patterns allow each elementary taxon (subspecies or monotypic species) to be distinguished, but degrees of overall (dis)similarity between patterns do not agree with traditional groupings (polytypic species or polyspecific complexes). Furthermore samples with the same botanical name but from widely separated provenances have quite different patterns, and the chemotype (like the isozymes electrophoretic profile) is associated with the geographical region rather than with (morphologically based) taxonomy. It is suggested that at least some Batrachium taxa are polyphyletic, artificially clustering convergent morphotypes that have arisen by parallel evolution within independent lineages. |
