Popis: This article analyzes the factors that make it difficult for artistic organizations to flourish in the open market. Certain handicaps are inherent in the nature of artistic goals; others are inherent in the technology of artistic production. The author suggests that these combined pressures are so severe that the arts should receive much more effective public support than is now the case.
