Popis: The escalating family disorganization as reflected in an increasing divorce rate, nonmarital cohabitation, single-headed households, increasing family violence and a decrease in family size has lead to a great deal of concern regarding the family as an institution. This concern lead to a request by the Department of Welfare to conduct research on the question whether the family is still valued as an institution, and on the nature of values supporting quality family life among the white and coloured population groups. Rather than debating these issues on statistical data concerning family disorganization, it was decided to to do qualitative research to determine how people view marriage and family living. Unstructured group interviews were conducted with 88 groups in various centres in the country, including grandparent groups, parenting groups and groups of young unmarried persons.
