A high-gain image intensifier system with a lucite Cherenkov radiator was used in an attempt to detect photons in Cherenkov rings. The radiator was a cone of halfangle 19 un. Concent 85% with an effective path length of 4.8 cm. The particles used emitted light in a cone of half-angle 47 un. Concent 85% 13', which was transformed to 14 un. Concent 85% by one internal reflection. On the average five spots were seen on the ring from individual particles. It appears that Cherenkov light has been observed, but that the rings cannot yet be used for precision measurements because of the small number of spots and poor resolution. (A.G.W.) |
