Microstructural Control of Nd123 Bulk Superconductors by Initial Compositions

Popis: Crystal growth of the melt-textured bulk Nd1+x Ba2-x Cu3O6+d (Nd123) crystals were investigated in air When initial compositions were changed from the usual composition of the RE123- Nd4Ba2Cu2O10(Nd422) quasibinary section to the Ba enriched one. Similar to the single crystal growth, bulk Nd123 crystals with a substitution content of about 0.02 were produced at around 1060°C for the initial composition with BaO/CuO ≈ 3/4. It was noted that the growth rates (R) of both in the a- and c-directions decreased as the BaO/CuO ratio became higher. Another unique finding includes decrease of particle size of the Nd422 phase with increasing the BaO/CuO ratio. Despite the smaller R of the Ba-enriched samples, homogeneous dispersion of the smaller Nd422 phase particles could be introduced in the Nd123 grown crystals.
