A solid-state bonding technique involving the use of gas pressure at elevated temperatures is being investigated for the preparation of Zircaloy-clad flat-plate uranium dioxide fuel elements. In this procedure, the fuel-element components, consisting of a compartmented Zircaloy picture frame, uranium dioxide fuel plates, and Zircaloy caldding plates, are assembled into a container that is evacuated and sealed. This sealed assembly is subjected to a helium pressure of 10,000 psi at a temperature of about 1500 F in a highpressure autoclave. The pressure brings the components into intimate contact, and a solid-state bond is attained through diffusion. The uranium dioxide is coated with graphite to prevent reaction between the fuel and Zircaloy cladding. (auth) |
