Relaxation measurements on MnCl2.4H2O and MnBr2.4H2O

Popis: Magnetic relaxation has been studied on MnCl2.4H2O and MnBr2.4H2O in the antiferromagnetic as well as in the paramagnetic state. The observed relaxation phenomena in the antiferromagnetic state cannot be described by a single relaxation time. In agreement with the relation τ = cH/α - the specific heat cH has a sharp maximum at the magnetic phase transition - a narrow maximum of the relaxation time at the transition temperature has been found. Attempts were made to reproduce the ‘second’ relaxation observed by Lasheen and Van den Broek7) in a powdered sample of MnCl2.4H2O but without success. Measurements of χad at high magnetic pulse fields confirm the existence of the so-called b phase in MnCl2.4H2O below 1.20 K.
