Attitudes to women-fellows varied from the Royal Society (women excluded) to the Chemical Society (qualified admission) to the Zoological Society (women allowed). The policies of Literary and Philosophical Societies were similarly varied, but Field Clubs, such as The Essex, and the British Association for the Advancement of Science were generally more welcoming; in such places, women could share their interests and knowledge with men, thereby enhancing their chances of a studentship or paid employment. |
