The Z pinch represents the simplest one-dimensional (1-D) model of the toroidal configuration. The parameters of Z-pinch plasmas can be estimated in a very simple way, if a steady-state equilibrium is assumed (Bennett, 1934; Blackman, 1951). This simplifying assumption rarely can be justified fully, taking into account the intrinsically dynamic nature of most Z-pinch experiments. In reality, the estimates based on this assumption are often correct only within an order of magnitude. Nevertheless, they are convenient and, therefore, conventionally used. |
