Influence of external electric field on the optical spectra of LiNbO 3 :Nd3+and LiNbO 3 :Cr3+crystals

Popis: The effect of external electric field on the absorption spectra of LiNbO3 crystals doped with Nd3 andCr3 ions has been investigated at 77 K by means of sensitive modulation method. A linear Stark effect isobserved on many lines of Nd3 and on B-lines of Cr3-centers in a field directed along the trigonal axis of thecrystal. No field effect is observed in a field directed perpendicular to the trigonal axis. Such properties of theStark effect show that the pennanent dipole moments of Nd3 and Cr- centers are oriented along the trigonal axis of the crystal. This confirms that the centers possess C3 point symmetry. The quantitative characteristics ofthe field effect are determined. 1. INTRODUCTION Doping with rare earth (RE) and transition metal (TM) ions promises the attractive applications ofLiNbO3 crystals in optical, nonlinear optical and laser systems.
