Popis: Oesophageal achalasia is a disease of undefined cause characterized by the loss of physiologic peristaltic propulsory movements of the lower oesophagus (mainly smooth muscle), and by incomplete lower oesophageal sphincter relaxation after ingestion. The pathophysiologic nature of the disease is not fully understood. Suppression in nitrous oxide release and action plays a central role. The main clinical characteristic is dysphagia to both solid food (91%) and liquids (85%).
