Optically enhanced electron attachment by p-benzoquinone

Popis: The relative rate of formation of long-lived parent anions in p -benzoquinone (BQ) by attachment of electrons with energies between 0 and 3 eV has been measured at an energy resolution of roughly 50 meV using a trochoidal electron monochromator-based electron impact negative ion mass spectrometer. A comparison of measurements taken near 0 eV shows an increase of the order of 10 5 in the attachment cross-section for BQ molecules excited by UV/visible light from a xenon arc lamp over that of ground state molecules. Resonances in attachment by ground state molecules are observed at impact energies of approximately 0.8, 1.0, and 1.3 eV. Negative ion resonances exhibited in the transmitted electron current corroborate these observations. Comparison is made with the results of previous work.
