The United Kingdom has seen a number of developments in policy and legislation during the last few years to deal with the problems of contaminated land. Following a major public consultation exercise on Paying for our Past, the Government published a Framework for Contaminated Land in November 1994, and introduced new provisions to deal with contaminated land into the Environment Bill. The paper describes the policy background in the United Kingdom and the principles of the new legislation, and outlines other initiatives. |
