Popis: | Discussions about affirmative action often exclude the perspective of young people, especially secondary-aged students. The purpose of this article is to present young people's attitudes and beliefs about affirmative action. A second purpose is to link perspectives about affirmative action to beliefs about one's future or the American Dream. A summary of 161 high school students' responses to items included in a survey package is presented. It was found that the students generally believe in the American Dream but disagree across racial groups about whether opportunities exist for all races and classes in America. The authors argue affirmative action is a mechanism of hope for youth and offers them a means by which they can transform the world in which they live. |
