THE VALUE OF THE INDEX FINGER VEIN METHOD OF THE TRADITIONAL MEDICINE TO DIAGNOSE THE LEVEL OF SEVERE ACUTE MALNUTRITION IN CHILDREN

Popis: Background: The practice of studying the index finger vein has been common in the oriental traditional medicine for children under three years of age. Based on the form, length, color, depth, caliber of the Venae digitales Palmares the traditional physician for the diagnosis and prognosis of Pediatric diseases. Objectives: To determine the value of this method to diagnose the level of acute malnutrion in the children. Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed by the finger pulse method in 127 children from 2 months to 5 years old, including: 35 healthy children and 92 acute malnutrition children. Results: The diagnositic method utilizing the location of index finger vein passing through Qi Gate as a prognostic factor of severe acute malnutrion in children would be accurate (A): 74%, speccificity (Sp): 81%, sensitivity (Se): 60%, Positive predictive value (Vp): 60%. Conclusions: The level of acute severe malnutrition in community can be diagnosed by this method. Key words: Acute malnutrion, finger pulse method, children, traditional medicine.
