Taking its point of departure in existing proximity theories, in relation to the transnational flows and reception of audiovisual content, this chapter shows how three types of proximity have influenced the acquisition and reception of Danish television drama in eight territories around the world. Emotional proximities connect individuals at the level of perceived universal affect that transcend cultural differences; cosmopolitan proximities connect individuals with ‘distant others’ through perceptions of stylistic and ethical/political sameness; and grapevine proximities connect individuals in meshes of media industry and personal networks through practices of viva voce, or word of mouth. These all point to the complexity of current perceptions of proximity in transnational audiences and the transnational television industry, and hence question the assumptions of homophily that underline existing theories of cultural and geo-linguistic proximities. |
