Popis: Building realistic living cities with people inside is useful for many applications like movies, computer games, and virtual reality (VR). However, algorithms that produce (i.e., procedurally generate) endless realistic cities are still scarce when simulating big cities. In this paper, we report on research that explores the design of a city generator algorithm that solves the problem of procedurally generating a realistic 3D endless city from “glueing together” a limited number of city tiles. Additionally, a new kind of pedestrian system is introduced that solves typical performance problems of a baseline pedestrian system. The inner workings of the city generator algorithm are described in detail, and solutions to problems encountered are discussed. We found that the city generator algorithm works in practice using a driving simulator. The research provides new insights into how it is possible to generate realistic endless cities, including simulated pedestrians.
