Popis: In this chapter a first analysis of the relation between Plantago species and their habitat will be given. In practically all experiments seeds were supplied from a single seed source: the Plantago nursery at the Field Station at Oostvoorne. Availability of soil nutrients and functioning of Plantago root systems will be evaluated as carboxylate production and proton excretion (Sect. 5.1), mineral nutrient concentration in the soil and in the plant (Sect. 5.2) and nitrogen acquisition and utilization (Sect. 5.3). A more extreme situation, the presence of NaCl in the soil and its effects on functioning of the salt-sensitive and salt-tolerant Plantago species will be given in Section 5.4.
