The clinical microbiology service to the critically ill patient must be fast and accurate. The slogan “Time saves lives” as a variation on “The golden hour” used in traumatology also applies to the treatment of a sepsis patient. Such a patient needs immediate and appropriate antimicrobial therapy [1]. You can only be sure about the adequacy of the empirical antibiotics once all results of the cultures, including the antimicrobial susceptibility patterns, are known. This section describes how long it takes before you get the results of the cultures including the susceptibility of the isolated microorganisms. Then the interpretation of these results will be discussed. Next, a possible scenario of the multidisciplinary consultation meeting is described. Finally, a brief description of the differences between the traditional microbiology and the SDD policy will be provided. |
