Popis: Resonant electronic (A←X) absorption transitions in high-enthalpy gas flows carry with them information on density and thermodynamic state. By spectral examination of the absorption (or re-emission as fluorescence) of a suitable source the information can be extracted. In this paper the utility of the approach for diagnostics of hypersonic flow properties is examined. Some important aspects of the method requiring special attention are discussed, including high-resolution characterization of the resonant lamp source, treatment of Doppler shifts, collisional broadening, nonequilibrium vibrational state population, and modeling of the spectrometer response function. Finally, some approaches for application to hypersonic propulsion are discussed.
