Popis: With the emergence of high amperage operated cells in smelting plants, the necessity to remove the high sodium levels coming from alumina reduction has increased considerably. The use of the ACS technology (Aluminium Crucible Skimmer) in combination with the TAC technology (Treatment of Aluminium in Crucible) to reduce alkalis before transferring the liquid metal into the furnace improves the overall efficiency and consistency of the results achieved. STAS developed a new generation of ACS using a robot, and the first version was implemented in an Alcoa casthouse in 2015. This new ACS technology has since been successfully operated, providing increased security for its personnel—which was the main objective of Alcoa. This paper presents the criteria used to develop the ACS, the benefits related to the process control, and the operating costs for two years of use. Field experience and the performance of the process are also presented.
