This paper describes a brief therapy group (10 weeks) for mothers whose school-aged children exhibited moderate to severe emotional disturbance. The nine participating mothers had been raised in families which they perceived to have seriously impeded their personal growth and maternal capacities. We wondered whether the long-term, three generational difficulties presented by these mothers could be altered by a brief therapy group. Our group was based on psychodynamic principles but utilized approaches of systemic and interventive questioning and Ericksonian psychotherapy. Particular emphasis was placed on developing metaphors salient for these women. Theoretical perspectives and descriptions of some interventions and group responses are provided. |
