While engaged in routine screening of fern leaves in connection with stomatal studies presently under way, we have been struck by the occurrence, nature, and variability of the hypodermal layers encountered. Examination of the likely literature sources has disclosed no detailed account of these tissues, although it is probable that their occurrence can be of significant taxonomic value for groups in which they are found. It is the purpose of this report to summarize our observations in expectation that they may be of more general interest. |
