Overview. Both the players and the resources invested have grown significantly since the financial crisis of 2008. Advisors who had traditionally concentrated on working for publicly listed firms shifted some of their attention to family and founder led businesses. Recent History. The last three decades correspond to major developments in the sector: the 1990s to the explosive growth of trusts and the advent of psychologically trained family business consultants, the 2000s to the establishment of family offices and the proliferation of specialist wealth management offerings from banks, and the present decade to the rise of general consultants offering a strategic perspective. Outlook. Family and founder-led businesses around the world today expect sophisticated, specialist advice on succession, but that advice has to be grounded in an understanding of the challenges faced by the business. As a sector, succession services are evolving from an almost exclusive emphasis on succession for continuity, as practiced in the 1990s and much of the first decade of the 21st century, to a more balanced view that includes the possibility of succession for change. |
