This study aims to evaluate the feasibility of landfill leach ate treatment using micro algae. The growth and nutrients removal efficiency of a newly isolated micro alga Scenedesmus sp. CHX1 were monitored when the strain grew in landfill leach ate at higher dilution, including 2%, 5% and 10% treatments, and 20% treatment. Results showed that better growth curves were observed in treatments at higher dilution in comparison with that in modified BG-11 medium, and the average biomass productivity was 37.5 mg l-1 d-1, whereas significant inhibition was observed in 20% treatment. Maximum removal efficiency was measured at 70%, 72%, 95% and 16% for total nitrogen, ammonia nitrogen, total phosphorus and COD by the end of 20-day cultivation period, respectively. Accumulation into biomass might be responsible for the main nitrogen and phosphorus removal mechanism. The preliminary results demonstrated the feasibility of using micro algae for landfill leach ate treatment, but appropriate dilution in pre-treatment might be necessary. |
