Hydrogeochemistry of Dutch groundwater: classification into natural homogeneous groupings with fuzzy c-means clustering

Popis: Fuzzy c-means (FCM) clustering has been applied successfully to classify shallow Dutch groundwater into homogeneous groups. The method, FCM, gives a fast, direct and sophisticated insight into the data structure of the Dutch National Groundwater Quality Monitoring Network data set, which was set up to monitor the groundwater quality to 25 m below surface level, the calculated clusters are geochemically interpretable and can be related to the end members of the hydrological cycle (seawater, riverwater and precipitation), geochemical processes (carbonate dissolution, cation exchange and redox processes) and pollution.
