Popis: | The antennal tips of both sexes of adult Toxorhymchites brevipalpis Theobald bear 2 sensilla coeloconica (pegs in pits). Each sensillum is innervated by 3 bipolar neurons; the dendrites of 2 are unbranched, whereas the distal portion of the 3rd is divided into a few lamellae. Except for a less extensive development of the lamellated dendrite and the entire sensillum being proportionately smaller in relation to antennal size, the sensilla coeloconica on Tx. brevipalpis are morphologically similar to those on previously studied culicine and anopheline species. The 2 neurons with unbranched dendrites probably respond to heat transferred by convection. The lamellated dendrite may be sensitive to infrared radiation or possibly mechanical stimuli. |
