Popis: The nocturnal indoor resting height distributions of Anopheles aconitus, An. subpictus, An. indefinitus, An. kochi and An. barbirostris were studied in Central Java, Indonesia. The 1st 3 species had almost identical resting distributions, with a median resting height of 38 cm. Median resting heights of the last 2 species were higher, being 68 cm for An. kochi and 229 cm for An. barbirostris . Some 93% of female Anopheles aconitus , the principal vector of malaria in Java, rested below a height of 150 cm above floor level. It is, therefore, suggested that the expenditure of indoor residual insecticides could be reduced, while still attaining control of this species, by treating only the lower portions of walls. The use of more selective spray methods in malaria programs is briefly reviewed and discussed.
