Popis: Over the last decade, mobile learning has become one of the most important trends in education. Leveraging on the technological capabilities of mobile devices, researchers and teachers have investigated the use of mobile devices in a variety of disciplines, including environmental education, in order to design innovative educational material such as augmented reality (AR) apps. Designing technologically enhanced learning activities for environmental education is particularly challenging because they often take place in informal settings and outdoors, for example through field trips or visits to parks. In this chapter, we discuss the potential of augmented reality for outdoor environmental education. More specially, we: (i) give a brief overview of learning theories that promote learning in context; (ii) describe a number of illustrative examples of augmented reality mobile apps for environmental education; (iii) and discuss the purpose and forms of digital augmentations in the context of environmental education.
