Popis: | Knowledge of the organic matter humification processes in sediments is essential for understanding the carbon biogeochemical cycles. The aim of this study is to analyse the relationship between the functional group properties of humic acids and the extent of humification in mangrove sediments using elemental analysis and UV-Visible spectroscopic technique. Sediment sampling has been done in a tropical mangrove on a spatial as well as temporal basis, covering the pre-monsoon, monsoon and post-monsoon seasons during 2018–2019. The UV-Visible absorbance of isolated humic substances was measured at specific wavelengths of E (250, 270, 280, 365, 664, 400, 407, 472, 465 nm). Based on these specific ratios, E465/664, E472/664, E250/365 and E270/400 were calculated. The E4/E6 ratio was observed to be high. This is indicative of higher humification, the presence of more aliphatic content and unsaturated compounds. The E2/E3 ratio supports the above findings. The elemental analysis gives the same output as that obtained from UV-spectrometric data. The results of PCA analysis show that carbon and O/C are negatively correlated, whereas O/C and oxygen are positively related. H/C is also positively related to carbon and O/C. |
