Popis: Hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) is often diagnosed in the prenatal period by echocardiography, but may not be recognized until after birth. Whether parents are expecting their infant to be admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU) immediately following birth, or this occurs after the infant presents with symptoms, this is a very frightening and stressful time for parents. The critical care nurse plays an essential role in providing a safe and supportive environment. Known stressors for parents in an intensive care environment include sights and sounds of the ICU, the physical appearance of the child, procedures performed on the child, staff communication and staff behavior [1]. Organized and systematic preparation for admission of an infant with HLHS helps alleviate some of these parental stressors [2]. The timing of the diagnosis can greatly influence the nursing plan of care.
