Given that Health Extension Program is the backbone to the national health system and will remain the main strategy to improve Ethiopian health status,1 it is imperative to re-examine the performance of HEP in the context of changing roles and responsibilities of health extension workers, conceptualize and synthesis the factors which could shape and influence the performance of the program, which will assist the development of valid metrics to measure performance, and identify pathways to optimization of the program. In this regard, it is essential to conceptualize multilevel factors that could affect the performance of HEP as reported and documented in the existing literature. This will enable us to conceptualize determinants of HEP/HEWs performance, and understand how performance is perceived and understood by different stakeholders addressed in the previous researches. Such knowledge will contribute to identify critical intervention pathways for optimization of the performance in Ethiopia and similar settings. This will be achieved through mapping and in-depth analysis of the literature and research (published and unpublished) related to HEP/HEWs performance in Ethiopia, from its inception to up-to-date. |
