Popis: The following article is the first in a series that I hope will eventually appear in the pages of curator. The series represents a response to the many appeals for help that we receive from curators charged with the care of specimens outside their particular areas of experience or training. In many museums where the staff is too limited for specialization, or where even one officer has the supervision of a variety of subjects, many problems arise that are not readily solved by available advice. Moreover, by inadvertence, precious specimens may be endangered for lack of the experience that specialization gives. For these reasons we have planned a sequence of articles on the care and preservation of museum specimens, subject by subject. It is our hope that they will be found useful and valuable.
