The influence of conical burner tunnels on recirculation inside the tunnel and the combustionchamber of large industrial furnaces is discussed, including their influence on flame stability. For the tunnel comfigurations investigated, the results indicate that the dominant factor affecting flame root stabilization is the tunnel geometry itself (i.e. length, width and inclination), as opposed to the presence of tunnel/combustion chamber recirculation. The formation of recirculation seems to be restricted to a stability envelope, which is not strong enough to control flame stabilization. The well-known numerical model for confined reacting flows developed by Spalding and coworkers was used to acquire qualitative information concerning the phenomenological trends for temperature and stream function. |
