Popis: | The siphuncle of the chambered nautilus (Nautilus spp) can transport cameral liquid against osmotic pressure gradients, and is presumed to be able to transport against hydrostatic pressure gradients. It is hypothesized that the mechanism of such transport involves “local osmosis” in which the siphuncle actively trasports sodium into the blind-ended sacs of the siphuncle cells' basolateral labyrinth. This study supports this hypothesis since NaK ATPase activity was localized only over the membranes of the labyrinth. The appearance of the reaction product required potassium and was inhibited by ouabain, a specific inhibitor of the NaK ATPase. |
