Popis:	FEL development has now reached the stage where user facilities are being planned and a number of these are already in operation or very near to completion. All such facilities so far provide sources of infrared radiation and the next step will be to extend this to the ultraviolet and beyond. An elementary introduction to the operating principles and main characteristics of FELs is given, with the emphasis on practical schemes that can be envisaged. Existing FEL sources will be reviewed and progress in the development to shorter operating wavelengths discussed.
