A collection of Tartary buckwheat (Fagopyrum tataricum Gaertn.) varieties and strains, cultivated at the experimental site of Terranova del Pollino for two running years (2008 and 2009), alternatively at an elevation above sea level of around 950 m in the first year and at approximately 1300 m in the second year, were assessed for grain rutin content. Results obtained ranged between 1694 mg/100g d.w. (dry weight) of PI427235 and 941 mg/100g d.w. of Wei 93-8 in 2008 and 1544 mg/100g d.w. of RCAT061058 and 577 mg/100g d.w. of P9324 Karimabad in 2009. The range of rutin values observed were in line with the data available in literature both as the actual contents and the extent of variation among genotypes, in that the rutin content more or less doubles from the least to the greatest value when a large number of genotypes are taken into account. The difference in altitude between the two years of experimentation appeared not to have a strong impact either on the single entries nor on the overall field average. Most of the entries presented values above or around 1000 mg/ 100g d.w., thus proving that Tartary buckwheat grain represents an important natural source of rutin. |
