To determine energy levels and provide information for elemental analysis, particularly of geological materials, the gamma ray spectra from the capture of neutrons supplied by a pool type reactor were measured directly with a lithium drifted germanium, Ge(Li), detector. Cobalt gave a better response than expected from the literature data on neutron absorption and gamma ray yields. This enhancement stemmed from the signal reinforcement by gamma ray interactions with the detector and the fortuitous spacing of the energy levels of the excited cobalt nucleus. |
