Popis: In order to understand the properties of smectite clays, we need to build up microscopic structural and dynamic models of the aqueous interlayer region between the negatively charged plate-like clay layers. We present a brief review of the role of neutron scattering in providing the quantitative information necessary for producing such models, with emphasis on our own recent results for Wyoming montmorillonite.
